Start or Reactivate a Chapter at Your School

Starting a New Chapter

Follow these easy steps to start a chapter at your school:

  1. Have at least six charter members, but no more than twelve listed on the Membership Form. Charter members may be students or faculty.
  2. Complete the Petition to Charter form.
  3. Send the completed documents to skd@niu.edu
  4. SKD will then generate an invoice for the $50.00 charter fee plus $35.00 National Membership dues for each charter member.

Notes for after you have petitioned to charter a chapter:

  • Once the petition to charter form, membership form, and fees are received, the Central Office will process your order and a charter will be issued to establish your chapter. The charter will bear the Greek name of your chapter assigned by the Central Office.
  • The Central Office will send the chapter charter, new member certificates, and membership pins to the Chapter Advisor.
  • Initiation/Induction ceremonies can be found in the SKD Chapter Handbook.

Reactivating Inactive Chapters

A chapter will be declared inactive when the chapter fails to induct at least one member during an academic year.

Inactive chapters may request reactivation using the following procedures:

  • Complete the Request to Reactivate form, which requires signatures of six persons qualified for active membership. Signatures from faculty members and the potential Advisor may be included.
  • Submit the Request to Reactivate form, a $25 reactivation fee, and a one-time $35 membership fee for each new member.
