Sigma Kappa Delta is the English Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges. It was founded in 1996 at Cottey College. The Sigma Kappa Delta Central Office is now located at Northern Illinois University. The Society strives to:
- Confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate studies;
- Provide, through its local chapters, cultural stimulation on college campuses and promote interest in literature and the English language in surrounding communities;
- Foster all aspects of the discipline of English, including literature, language, and writing;
- Promote exemplary character and good fellowship among its members;
- Exhibit high standards of academic excellence; and
- Serve society by fostering literacy.
A Sigma Kappa Delta chapter is more than just another college club. It is a unique entity that opens the doors of opportunity for its members and facilitates academic, professional, and personal growth. There are approximately 2,500 members inducted annually at more than 100 active chapters across the country, with each chapter defined by its location and membership, yet bound to the rest by the common goal of promoting excellence in the disciplines of the English language.
Members of every chapter have the opportunity to share their love of literature and linguistics with like-minded peers, participate in rewarding activities, and be recognized for their accomplishments. They may also apply for one or more of the Society’s numerous awards and scholarships.
The guiding principles of Sigma Kappa Delta can be found in our Constitution.

Founded on April 21, 1996, Sigma Kappa Delta has its origins in Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society for four-year colleges and universities. Dr. William C. Johnson, then Executive Director of Sigma Tau Delta and Professor of English at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, suggested a new national English honor society designed especially for two-year college students under the direction of Sigma Tau Delta. Sigma Tau Delta’s Board graciously agreed. Thus, Sigma Kappa Delta was founded when Dr. Johnson invited four two-year college instructors to meet April 18-21, 1996, at the Chicago Allerton Hotel on the Miracle Mile. Sigma Kappa Delta is pleased to be part of the English Honor Societies, alongside Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society for High Schools (founded in 2005) and the English Language Arts Honor Society for Grades 6 – 9 (founded in 2023).
