2024 SKD National Convention Roundtables

Literature—A Gateway to Understanding Ourselves

A call was sent to all Sigma Kappa Delta advisors to meet with their membership and share the roundtable prompt. Students then sent abstracts of their presentations to the National Office.  A team of judges was assembled who read all abstracts and then chose the top four who will serve as participants and one alternate to serve as moderator of the roundtable. The participants will encourage audience members to share their own experiences based on this prompt.

Students will talk about a piece of literature that has influenced them during a major change in their lives, focusing on how literature helped to transform their thinking or helped them learn new ways of thinking, which may have ignited their own innovative ideas.

Teaching at the Two-Year College: Big Things Come in Small Packages

This roundtable was created after a conversation with the Sigma Tau Delta Convention Committee. Committee members noted that several of their students were inquiring about teaching at the two-year college and felt these students would benefit from Sigma Kappa Delta advisors speaking about their careers and the advantages of choosing a two-year college faculty position.  A call was sent to all Sigma Kappa Delta advisors inviting them to submit an abstract dealing with the rewards to be found teaching at the two-year college. The abstracts were then read by a committee who decided on the advisors to compose this roundtable. There will be a question-and-answer session for audience members to ask questions about making this career choice.

Sigma Kappa Delta advisors will address mentoring students by sponsoring student organizations and dealing with the ever-evolving technological and educational landscapes while teaching diverse learners from backgrounds that cross conventional divides of age, race, ethnicity, class, and academic preparation.

Maintaining an Innovative Chapter

A call was sent to all Sigma Kappa Delta advisors providing them with the prompt and asking them to submit abstracts of how they maintain their Sigma Kappa Delta chapters.  A team of judges was assembled who read all abstracts and then chose the top four who will serve as participants and one alternate to serve as moderator of the roundtable. The participants will encourage audience members to share their own experiences as advisors or members of Sigma Kappa Delta or Sigma Tau Delta chapters.

Advisors will share how previous chapter events, former student officers, or previous conferences have influenced them to maintain an ever-changing, evolving chapter. They will also address ways to be innovative while also respecting the foundations and successes of the past.
